About
I've spent more than a decade reporting on war, displacement, economic collapse and political upheaval across the Middle East – always focusing on the people living through it.
I'm currently a foreign correspondent in The National's Beirut bureau, covering Lebanon and Syria. I'm Syrian-American, born and raised in the US, and have been based in the Levant for more than a decade. I've reported from front lines, revolutions, detention centres, refugee camps, hospitals and presidential palaces, producing breaking news, investigations, features, live radio and on-camera reporting from across the region.
On December 8, 2024, after years of covering the Syrian civil war, I was among the first international journalists to enter Syria as the Assad regime collapsed, reporting from Damascus and across the country during the transition that followed. On August 4, 2020, after the Beirut port blast threw me across my bedroom, I reported live from the city in the immediate aftermath. My reporting has also spanned several wars, the Israeli occupation of south Lebanon, and successive waves of displacement across the region.
Much of my work combines field and investigative reporting, focusing on civilians and communities living through conflict, displacement and shifting borders while examining the political and military decisions shaping their lives.
Before joining The National, I reported for NPR and The New York Times and freelanced for a number of international publications.
I work across television, radio and digital platforms, providing live reporting, interviews and analysis from the field. I am available for broadcast contributions, interviews and expert commentary on Lebanon, Syria and the wider region.
